YouTube Gaming App Shuts Down This Week

The standalone YouTube Gaming app will close on May 30. YouTube announced the impending shutdown last year, saying the spin-off caused “confusion” among game fans. Instead, it integrated the service into its main application, launching a gaming-focused hub that has already largely replaced the old YouTube Gaming.

In a help page, YouTube leads all remaining YouTube Gaming fans at this new hub. This is also the merger of YouTube and YouTube Gaming subscriptions, although people will apparently lose the list of games they have registered. “We launched YouTube Gaming as a standalone app for gamers where we tested new features based on feedback from the gaming community,” the page explains. “We want to continue to build a stronger home for the thriving gaming community on YouTube.”

YouTube Gaming was launched in 2015. YouTube promoted it as a way to improve the live streaming experience and keep irrelevant content away from gaming fans, besides being a test bed for features like channel subscriptions and a dark mode. But according to the company, most users still watched game videos on the main app, and many didn’t even understand what YouTube Gaming was for. Its best features came later on the main platform – where a lot more people actually saw them.
