Former Swinburne company, educator, entrepreneur and CEO of To leaveDr Gráinne Oates, is revolutionizing education and training with a multi-award winning game app called Quitch.

Since its development in 2015, Quitch has become a global hit in the education sector via high schools and universities alongside the corporate sector with users spanning various industries.

Dr Oates said her experience as an MBA student and lecturer in accounting at Swinburne was the real catalyst for creating the app.

“The concept of the app originated many years ago when I was teaching accounting and had about 500 students in the theater at a time. ‘not exaggerating here, were attached to their cell phones. I figured I had to find a mobile-centric solution to keep them engaged.

Engaging students in course content to keep them on track can be challenging. This is a challenge that all academics face. For me, having the voice of the student, as well as the voice of the educator, was key to solving the problem,” she said.

But designing a solution to this problem and scaling and running a business presented two completely different challenges. However, through her MBA background, Dr. Oates has been equipped with the skills and knowledge to get Quitch off on the right foot.

“I learned a lot about the different aspects of running a business as a student at Swinburne, from marketing and business strategy to financing and sustaining a business over time. It’s never simple or easy to start a business, and that solid foundation became so important to me later when launching Quitch,” said Dr Oates.

Educate and train through play

Originally designed to support Dr Oates’ accounting lessons, the game app Quitch is now used across a wide range of disciplines across the Australian education sector to improve student retention and improve performance – ensuring that teachers understand the issues students are facing and respond to those concerns in real time. -time.

“Quitch aims to consolidate and reinforce students’ primary learning. It’s not about replacing a teacher, but about giving students what they’ve been asking for, which is access to materials to test themselves when and where they want.

Quitch gives personalized feedback and guides students through a unique traffic light system on what areas they need to focus on vs. what they’ll quickly master – and it’s all gamified. This means that students trade the traditional burdens of textbook study for a modern approach to reinforcing learning that emphasizes the enjoyment of the study process and the fun along the way.

“We first tried it with our accounting students and it went fantastically. They loved it and we’ve worked with the students ever since to make sure it still meets their needs,” said the Dr. Oates.

Partnership with Microsoft

Following great success in the field of education, it became apparent to Dr. Oates and the Quitch team that they needed the courage to take Quitch out of the academic sector and let him expand.

Today, Quitch delivers learning outcomes around the world with customers in the United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. The Quitch team now numbers 10 people, many of whom are Swinburne graduates, in product development, IT, gamification, international business, marketing and customer success.

“There’s no doubt about it, Quitch has taken us into areas that we didn’t anticipate when we started. Organizations are now using Quitch for staff training in cybersecurity, IT training, onboarding, and in pharmaceutical and biotech companies for good manufacturing practices,” said Dr Oates.

Three months ago, Quitch proudly announced its partnership with Microsoft Teams, with users now able to download the Quitch app for use within their own organization.

“Organizations are looking to make their training more interactive and engaging. It’s such a seamless process to set up Quitch in Teams and adds real value to the organization. The announcement of this partnership was excellent news. It was just an amazing feat for such a small team to be able to deliver and it allows us to really grow our audience and the visibility of Quitch. This is a very exciting phase for us.

Lessons from a tech entrepreneur

As the CEO of a tech start-up, Dr. Oates believes entrepreneurial success comes down to finding innovative solutions to important problems.

“I have a background in education and accounting, not technology. However, I now run a successful technology company. I would say to anyone, if you have an idea – be brave, pitch it and don’t be afraid to share it with people. Get as much feedback as possible early on and always speak with your potential customers.

“I think in order to be successful, it’s really important that there is a clear problem and then you build that solution to solve that problem. But building it with the people who will use it is the important thing there.

“None of these successes would have been possible without the fantastic team and advisors at Quitch.
