Gaming PC deal: Grab AMD’s RX 6800 XT and Ryzen 7 5800 in this Alienware PC for $1,600

In the Best Buy, um, dads and grads sale, I spotted an Alienware R10 Ryzen Edition gaming PC that combines some of AMD’s best silicon today for just $1,600 (opens in a new tab). That’s a bargain considering this card matches Nvidia’s RTX 3080 (opens in a new tab)and you also get a reasonably specified PC around it.

My favorite GPU among AMD’s RX 6000 series GPUs (I gave it 90% in our review), the Radeon RX 6800 XT (opens in a new tab) is a great card for 4K gaming. It comes with a generous 16GB of GDDR6 memory, a bit more capacity than either of the competing RTX 3080 models, and it doesn’t struggle to push 60fps even at 4K resolution. more demanding.

To be honest, I wish you could still buy the RX 6800 XT for its original MSRP of $649, but that’s not really the case anymore. Best Buy has an $800 Gigabyte model (opens in a new tab) in its dads and graduates sale (my editor told me not to mention the name of the sale because it sounds silly so I’ll do it often) which is a decent price if you really need to buy the card on its own.

We’re looking at a holistic PC offering here in the Dads and Grads sale, though. This powerful GPU was paired with a Ryzen 7 5800 for eight cores and 16 threads of CPU performance. It’s not quite the ‘X’ model we usually recommend in gaming PCs, but it’s not far off as it’s only moderately slower in terms of clock speed. The TDP is under 65W, and those are pretty much the only differences between the two.

This CPU and GPU combination means you get AMD’s newest architectures in this one machine, RDNA 2 and Zen 3. Now we know that RDNA 3 and Zen 4 are due later this year, but you probably won’t find not too many offers for these tokens upfront. Personally, I wouldn’t blame you for waiting to see how fair these chips are – at least on the graphics side, AMD could really up their ball game – but if you don’t want to wait and save some cash, this is a solid option.

However, a PC is more than a GPU and CPU glued together. There’s also a 1TB SSD on this machine and 16GB of DDR4 RAM. Perhaps the best part is that unlike the newer Alienware models we reviewed, I understand that most parts of the R10 Ryzen Edition are standard spec. It doesn’t seem like the easiest machine to use, but at least there’s an upgrade path beyond Dell tech support if you need it. Although you will get this support if you need it.

This is just one deal I spotted at Best Buy. There are still 1,000 or more products for sale in his Dads & Grads Sale (opens in a new tab) for the next few days, it might be worth scrolling if you’re in the market for an upgrade.
